James Douglas Garden Design is built on the belief that a great garden requires a balance of creative vision and practical real-world plant knowledge.
With a BA (Hons) in Garden Design and an ND in Horticulture, James has cultivated a career where academic theory meets hands-on experience. His journey has taken him from formal studies in Lancashire to the management and development of a prestigious private estate in Surrey and into lecturing positions where he shared his expertise in design theory and horticulture.
Today, James balances his private design studio with daily work within a specialist plant nursery. This constant immersion provides a distinct advantage: a ‘nurseryman’s eye’ for plant health and seasonal behavior. This unique position allows us to hand-pick and source exceptional plant stock directly, ensuring the vision on paper is matched by the quality and vigor of the specimens in the ground.
By blending this daily practical insight with a focus on small-to-medium private gardens, we provide a bespoke service that is both sophisticated and sustainable. We don’t just create gardens that look beautiful. We design and source living, breathing spaces built to thrive for everyday living.
